Seniors in high school are among my favorite subjects to photograph, as they crave fresh, unique, bold and fun photography. In Baton Rouge area the high school seniors I photograph each want something different, and I bring that to the table. I help with wardrobe selection often to ensure the colors and textures work well with the locations we’ll be using. My sessions last generally 3-4 hours including travel, and I’m full of energy the entire session.

I never do “picture of the day” posts but this photo is such a favorite it should be “picture of the year” and 2012 has JUST begun! Lauren wanted to do a photo session to commemorate her success in graduating from Louisiana State University this Spring and we did a 30 minute mini session at the Rural Life Museum. I love double exposure, but this blending of a texture was done in Photoshop.

Every once in a while I get the rare opportunity to witness and artfully photograph a guy proposing marriage to his girlfriend. In this case, the guy, Erik, called me just a few days before he was to pop the question at Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, LA, which is one of my favorite locations to photograph weddings (I’m honored to be one of Oak Alley’s preferred wedding photographers). He wanted me to be hidden along the path leading up to the mansion until the time came for him to propose, at which time I would document the entire proposal.

He and his girlfriend, Stacy, both from Loveland, CO, took a tour of Oak Alley’s grounds along with the mansion, and then at the end of the tour, they walked towards the levee. The plan was for him to drop to one knee asking Stacy for her hand in marriage as they walked back towards the mansion. I had made an “x” on the path in black tape to mark where the proposal was to take place.

Everything worked perfectly and Stacy had no clue I was there to document her. She even saw me a couple times with my assistant, but I made it seem like I was there photographing my assistant in front of the mansion. After the proposal and the tears of extreme joy, I took photos of the newly engaged couple around the property for half an hour enjoying some of the best light Louisiana has to offer in the late afternoon of early April.

The last couple photos are of the ring and yes, that’s a blue sapphire underneath the diamond…so unique! Way to go Erik!

basic photo course for those seeking to dramatically improve their photography skills.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN (and hopefully master)
Camera functions & exposure control (aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, white balance)
Learn proper on-camera flash and available lighting techniques using sun, shade and a reflector
Learn use of directional lighting to flatter your subject
Learn when to use which lens Learn composition rules for portraits and landscapes
Develop an artistic eye which opens up the photographic possibilities around you
Post production using Lightroom 4 or Photoshop CS5/6 – shoot and edit in RAW format using professional software (software not provided)

I’m now an official pet photographer in Baton Rouge. I LOVE MY NEW DOG and I love adoption! Jency and I just adopted a new 7 week old Chihuahua-Jack Russell Terrier puppy (we think) that has further softened my heart. My obsession with Lily Hogan (that’s the name we gave her) is unending. Here’s the photos which chronicle the last few days with her. We start with her at the Denham Springs Animal Shelter where we adopted her March 9. Then we gave Lily her first bath followed by her first of many professional portrait sessions in my studio.

Baton Rouge engagement photography in downtown | Toni & Patrick 1.31.12

Downtown Baton Rouge is a fantastic location for engagement photography, and Toni & Patrick were up for an Aaron Hogan style adventure! Since I’m not photographing Toni and Patrick’s destination wedding, I wanted to make their engagement portraits extra special.

I always take detours when doing engagement photos, trying to mix up the locations I choose. Sometimes I base the locations on the couple’s clothing, other times it’s based on their personalities. This session I chose locations for both reasons. Enjoy the beautiful sky we had that day in January at the levee. It’s fun to use the gross river as a backdrop especially at sunset when the gross natural colors are masked by the iridescent sky. Please comment on the post at bottom if you enjoy the photos.

Hello I’m Jency. The wife of the Mr. Aaron Hogan. We have been married for six months, and it has been amazing! But I wanted to let you in on a little secret to Aaron’s heart. He is obsessed with fresh fruit juice. When you register for wedding presents you don’t really know which presents will end up being your favorite. But we have decided to declare that this beautiful piece of metal is our favorite appliance ever made. The shiny Breville citrus juicer. It makes juicing soooo easy, and it is super easy to clean. So if you are a bride and you are registering I’d say to consider it. I decided to throw on my wedding dress on and surprise Aaron this morning with fresh blood orange juice. I love my dress and I’m always looking for a reason to put it on. I also love the surprise element. Aaron got a kick out of seeing me in it again. He bought my dress for me and surprised me with it about a month before our wedding date. He bought it at this link on Etsy, from a designer who lives in China. Who says you can’t put your wedding dress on when ever you want, even to make juice in your kitchen. When I put it on I felt the material flowing around my body as I walked barefoot through the kitchen this morning it took me back to my wedding day so fast. The feeling made me do a little dance around the kitchen. Ladies, if you are married I say go grab that dress and surprise your husband. If your not married yet then get ready for the most exciting ride of your life. What fun.

Baton Rouge Wedding Photography | Megan & Brandon 3.12.11

Megan and Brandon’s wedding in March of 2011 was held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, LA. What a gorgeous day it was for a spring wedding! So many personalized touches went into their big day; they truly made it their own. From Megan’s bouquet encased in a sheath of fabric from her mother’s wedding gown, to their Parent’s wedding portraits framed on the tables at the reception, which was held at Louisiana Old State Capitol. Amongst their guests was the famous stuffed animal Parrot who has become a tradition between their friends. Too fun! They had a blast on their wedding day! This wedding was shot the day before Aaron Hogan, Eye Wander Photo’s owner/president, fell from the second story of a building just around the corner from where this wedding was held. What a day! St. Francisville Wedding Photography at Afton Villa Gardens | Alicia & Cory 3.26.11

Alicia and Cory’s wedding back in March of 2011 was held at the beautiful and majestic Afton Villa Gardens in St. Francisville, LA. This gorgeous venue was established in 1849 and is one of the best hidden jewels in St. Francisville. The fresh spring weather was perfect the day of the wedding, but nothing compared to what a beautiful bride Alicia made. Cory was glowing the whole day every time he caught a glance at his bride! If you have ever been to St. Francisville in the Spring time, you know it is a hard sight to beat! All the flowers in the garden were in bloom, including the tulips, which made an amazing setting for their first look at each other before the ceremony. It was a true Louisiana wedding reception to end the night, complete with a funky Cajun Zydeco band! Below are the wedding vendors from this event.
